We stayed in ‘The Groundkeepers Cottage’ inspired by Harry Potters’ Hagrid’s Hut and WOW is it amazing! So much thought and detail has gone in to creating this uniquely, extraordinary accommodation. The cottage is filled with Harry Potter styled décor; complete with Hedwig the Owl and the most gorgeous wood burning stove. The children had an amazing, treehouse looking bunkbed and we slept next to them in a big cosy double bed, it felt fun to all share a room and have a little ‘sleepover’. The copper bath and décor in the bathroom are simply stunning and so original. The green bathroom tiles used are the same tiles used on the set of Harry Potter when filming the inside of the Ministry of Magic, every detail adds to the authenticity of the ‘Hut and it feels like living in a childhood dream!

On the grounds you will find an adventure play area, several little camping pods and plenty of resident animals including two Shetland Ponies; Bluebell & Tom. One morning whilst making our breakfast one of the peacocks, Merlin, came and joined us and sat by the window – a real Snow White moment!

Behind the back of the cottage is a lovely little private garden space and picnic table. We sat out, enjoyed the sunshine with a couple of cocktails, and had a few games of ‘Gringotts’ checkers. After getting the kids settled, we snuggled down for a Harry Potter movie marathon (obviously) in the enchanting living room, drinking red wine from Hagrid’s goblets and cosying up by the fire.

Close by to Whitby, just a 20 minute drive, we decided to take a day trip to the beautiful seaside town. We did not realise how fantastic Whitby would be for the children, a huge pirate’s ship to explore, arcades, ice cream parlours, fair ground rides and more! After enjoying watching the kids on the teacups and trampolines, we headed down to West Cliff beach; a large and sandy beach with colourful beach huts and a children’s’ paddling pool. Harry took a donkey ride along the seafront on a beautiful little donkey named Fudge; the highlight of his trip!

The Stables pub, just a mile out of Whitby, was recommended to us by the lovely manager at North Shire. We popped in for a pub lunch and had a fantastic meal, great service and good, homely pub grub – we can recommend the Steak and Ale Pie!

Back at North Shire, the kids enjoyed a good run around at the playground and a little stroll down to visit the Shetland Ponies. We enjoyed another enchanting night in the wonderful Groundkeepers cottage, playing Harry Potter trivia and enjoying the fudge we picked up at the Whitby Fudge Bar.
